Odysseus and his companions entered Polifermo's den looking for food and drinks, not knowing that it was the place where the Cyclops slept and kept their sheep. Odysseus and Polyphemus is an 1896 oil painting by the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin. It has been part of the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston since 2012. The painting depicts an incident in the Odyssey, the epic poem by Homer which recounts the Greek hero Odysseus ' 10 year long return journey home from the Siege of Troy. there is no straightforward provision of a weapon for Odysseus to use.

While they are trapped, Polyphemus begins to eat Odysseus’ men one by one, with the promise to eat Odysseus last. Odysseus can’t allow this to continue, so he comes up with a plan to rescue his remaining men and himself. He decides to get Polyphemus drunk. On the island of Polyphemus, the fearsome one-eyed monster, Odysseus and his companions remained trapped like birds in a cage.

Polyphemus, upon realizing the escape, shouts that "No one had blinded him" to his fellow Cyclops, but they ignore him. On his ship, Odysseus makes fun of Polyphemus and reveals his name (he shouts that it was "Nobody" who hurt him, but Odysseus). Polyphemus, furious, throws large rocks at random into the sea, which almost reach the vessel.

The story reappears in later Classical literature. In Cyclops , the 5th-century BC play by Euripides , a chorus of satyrs offers comic relief from the grisly story of how Polyphemus is punished for his impious behaviour in not respecting the rites of hospitality.
